Emma was 9mos old for her second surgery. It was April 41,2006. We had to be there at 6am, but we didn't have to stay over night for this, thank God! When she was born her cleft went into her gums, and made a split between her front tooth and eye tooth. Dr. Denny also had to make sure that all of her tooth buds were there. So anyway we had to teach Emma how to drink out of a cup without a lid because she could not suck on anything at all. See your gums are very soft, and after surgery they could tear very easily.
This time they were able to give her what they call "happy juice" before taking her back. I was so happy about that! Her surgery took about 3hrs, but seemed like 10. When they were done they called us to the room where she had to stay until she woke up and ate and drank something. It was so amazing because she had no idea what happened. It was like she just woke up from a nap.
I will rave about her Dr. till the day I die. He is such a wonderful surgeon. Very personable and even better he looks like Santa Claus. He has been doing this for about 20yrs, and only does cranial/facial. When he came out to talk to us before we got to see her his eyes lit up with a big smile on his face. He was very happy to tell us she had all of her tooth buds.
When Emma is 6 or 7 she will be going through another surgery for the bone that holds your teeth in. Hers is split and she only had about a 5% chance for it to grow back and hers didn't. So I'm growing her hair long because they will take the bone from her skull. So I want it to be not that noticable in the back.
Thanks for listening!
